Storm Boelo: take care on roads as further disruption expected this weekend

Road users are urged to take extra care following Storm Austen, with further heavy rain expected tomorrow (Saturday 24 October) as Storm Boelo arrives.

Our control centre has dealt with over 100 calls this morning (Friday 23 October), mainly reporting fallen trees and branches, alongside flooding and standing water. Gusts exceeding 65mph have been recorded in north and north-west Devon.

The Taw Bridge has remained open and the A39 Torridge Bridge reopened at lunchtime on Friday, but both bridges continue to be closely monitored.

Reported problems include fallen trees partially blocking the A361 near South Molton, flooding on the B3227 at Stibb Cross and a branch partially obstructing the A388 North Road in Holsworthy. Other hazards may not yet have been reported or reached by crews.

Additional staff and crews are supporting the response through much of the weekend. People should expect slower responses to some further incidents caused by Storm Boelo, as teams deal with existing storm damage alongside new problems. Reports will be prioritised according to risk, and some clearance work may have to wait until conditions are safe for crews.

A yellow wind warning remains in place until 5pm today. Further rain and fallen leaves will increase the risk of surface water flooding over the weekend.

Please check weather forecasts and warnings before travelling, drive according to conditions and follow road closure signs. Take particular care on minor roads and exposed routes.

Never walk, cycle or drive through floodwater, which can hide missing drain covers and other hazards.

Report fallen trees or branches online. For a highway emergency requiring immediate attention, call 0345 155 1004.
