Rainbow flag raised at County Hall

We’re celebrating Exeter Pride 2023, and have proudly raised the rainbow flag over County Hall this morning.

Our Chairman, Cllr Ian Hall, has made equality, diversity and inclusion, one of his priorities during his year in office.

Speaking ahead of the flag raising this morning, he said:

Speaking ahead of the flag raising this morning, he said:

“It is a great honour to be raising the rainbow flag over County Hall again, showing support and solidarity for our LGBT+ community.

“Next month, Pride month, we will be holding the first meeting of our new commission of elected councillors, who will be championing equality, diversity and inclusion. This is part of our aim to promote, embed and protect the rights of LGBT+ people to fairness, dignity and respect, and encourage community cohesion across the county.

“I am acutely aware of the hostility currently directed towards trans women and girls, and we will use our position as community leaders to raise awareness of their own vulnerabilities and needs.

“Pride events are now an integral part of our country and county’s culture, and so I was sorry to hear that Exeter Pride 2023 has been cancelled due to not having enough volunteer stewards to help with the march and festival.

“I wish the committee every success with its Rainbow Fayre on Saturday and hope that Pride will return in full in 2024.”
