A one-night closure is planned on Torquay Road in Newton Abbot later this month so an old, unused railway footbridge can be safely removed by crane.
The bridge, on the south side of the A381, has been out of use for over a decade and has reached the end of its operational life.
Its removal is needed to maintain public safety and avoid the ongoing cost of looking after a structure that is no longer used.
Because the footbridge sits above the railway line and next to Torquay Road, specialist lifting equipment will be needed.
The work has been coordinated with Network Rail and will take place overnight on Saturday 19 September to Sunday 20 September 2026.
The closure will be from 8pm until 9am the following morning.
However the work is weather dependent and if there are poor weather conditions or there are operational issues that arise the work will be carried out on another weekend.
The two contingency dates set aside are Saturday 26 September to Sunday 27 September 2026 and Saturday 3 October to Sunday 4 October 2026.
A signed diversion will be in place during the closures, with advance warning signs displayed in the area before the work starts.
