Main works on Cullompton Relief Road to start this summer

Cullompton Relief Road

We’ll start on the main works Cullompton Relief Road works this summer now that we’ve appointed a contractor.

Wills Bros is the preferred supplier to deliver the new road, which is designed to ease congestion in the town centre and support Cullompton’s long-term growth.

The appointment marks the end of the preliminary work that began earlier this year, including ecological and archaeological activity on site ahead of the main construction phase.

The 1.3km route is intended to reduce pressure on Cullompton town centre, improve air quality, cut queuing off the M5 and help unlock new homes and jobs in the area.

As part of the scheme, new public land for the Cullompton Community Association (CCA) is being created and replacement facilities are being provided for sports clubs impacted by the construction of the road.

This will include new pathways and bridge connections to ensure the community retains safe, high-quality access across the area.

Councillor Dan Thomas, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said:

“This is an important step for Cullompton, and I’m pleased to see the project moving into its main construction phase. The new road will help tackle congestion in the town and support future growth in the area.”

Councillor Steve Keable, Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Regeneration at Mid Devon District Council, said:

“I am pleased the procurement process has now been completed. Appointing the main contractor is a significant milestone to deliver the relief road for Cullompton.”

Councillor James Buczkowski, the local county councillor for Cullompton and Bradninch said:

“For many years, residents have experienced congestion through the town centre and the knock-on impacts this has on journeys, local businesses and air quality. The appointment of a contractor is a major milestone and means residents can now see real progress towards delivering a project that has been talked about for decades.
“This is a major scheme for Cullompton, and it will be important that residents, businesses and community groups are kept informed and engaged as work progresses.”

Construction is expected to be completed in 2028.
