Improving communication with families through initial calls with the SEND Operations team

A new film explains the way Devon’s SEND Operations team supports families who have children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), through the Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) process.

Watch the film on YouTube.

The film features interviews with Claire Merchant-Jones, Head of Send Operations at Devon County Council and Senior EHCP Partner, Jane Day.

The film explores how the SEND Operations team is embedding its communications and relationship standard within its work. The standard has been co-created with families and is a commitment to open, respectful, and clear communication with every family.

An example of this commitment is the EHCP initial calls process. When it is agreed that a child or young person needs an assessment, an EHCP partner is allocated. These partners are responsible for managing assessments and any changes through the EHCP review process.

This allocation means that EHCP partners make an initial call to the child or young person’s parents or carers, so that relationships with families start with a conversation. During this conversation, families can ask any questions and understand what happens next. You can find out more about this in the new film.
