A four-week public consultation on proposals to allow traffic to travel in both directions along Dryden Road in Exeter has launched today (Thursday 5 November).
Dryden Road has been closed to through traffic since June 2020, when restrictions were introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic to reduce traffic levels and make it safer for people walking and cycling. The changes were made permanent in June 2022.
We are now proposing to remove the restriction on through traffic and reopen the road to two-way vehicle movements, to help mitigate traffic and road safety concerns on Bovemoors Lane. Alongside this, we are proposing a package of measures designed to keep speeds low and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
These measures include:
- Extending the existing 20mph zone;
- Installing two new road humps;
- Refurbishing two existing road humps;
- Building a raised table at the Kipling Drive junction;
- Installing a raised zebra crossing between Well Oak Park and Barrack Road.
Councillor Michael Mitchell, Chair of the Exeter Highways and Traffic Orders Committee, said:
“I look forward to local residents and others participating in the recently launched public consultation about the re-opening of Dryden Road. Whilst there are a wide range of views regarding the re-opening of Dryden Road this consultation will enable the public to have their say on the details of the proposed scheme.
“Following this consultation a report will come back to councillors for their consideration, so it is important that people participate in the consultation to ensure their views are included in the report.”
Councillor Dan Thomas, Cabinet Member for Highways, said:
“The aim is to restore another route through this part of Exeter while keeping speeds down and helping people walk and cycle safely. We want everyone who uses Dryden Road to look at the proposals and share their views.”
