We’re carrying out essential drainage repairs on Bickington Road in Barnstaple between 21 September and 9 October to help prevent flooding and improve safety for road users and pedestrians.
No roads will be closed and the work will be carried out under temporary traffic lights and outside the busiest periods, between 9.15am and 3.15pm each day.
Traffic lights will be staffed to ensure that traffic flows are managed effectively, and to maintain access to Woodville and Linden Gardens.
Outside those hours, both traffic lanes will be reopened. Additional resources will also be deployed to help ensure the work is completed on time.
The work was originally planned to take place at the same time as work by Wales & West Utilities.
However those plans have been put on hold – Wales & West Utilities is currently reviewing its plans.
The drainage work follows a number of localised floods which left both the road and footways underwater, a hazard for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, including children travelling to and from school.
Investigations by our engineers identified significant failures in underground drainage pipes which need to be repaired to restore the system to full working order.
The route is also part of the county’s primary gritting network, meaning the repairs need to be completed before the cold weather sets in.
