It recognises the fact that the Council has developed HR and recruitment policies that support former Armed Forces personnel and reservists employed by the Council.
It comes just two years after the Council received the Armed Forces Covenant Bronze Award after signing the Employer Armed Forces Covenant.
Since then, the Council has worked to recognise the huge commitment and contribution that the Armed Forces community has made to Devon and the Council itself, and to also understand the issues that veterans, reservist and their family members face.
One of the areas of improvement has been the increase in support the council gives to people who are transitioning from the Forces into career opportunities within the Council, as well as the support to employees who have partners who serve in the Armed Forces. That includes:
- Providing information and signposting regarding the council’s recruitment processes to military families
- Now actively recruiting from those transitioning to civilian life, via Employer Insite days and offering Work Experience Programme opportunities, with mentoring support from ex-military personnel now employed with the council
- Support employees who have partners on deployment
- Actively working with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP)
In addition to the professional support, the Council also established a staff Armed Forces network. The space was set up to enable staff from the community to come together, sharing experiences and providing mutual support for staff who have served, are reservists or have close family who are serving. The advice they’ve given, and the opportunities created has also been a huge contributor to Devon County Council receiving the Armed Forces Covenant Silver Award.

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and former member of the Armed Forces, said:
“Sometimes, the lives of the Armed Forces community after they have served can be difficult. The transition into another career and the changing way of life for their families can be hard. Devon County Council is not only an empathetic employer, but one of the many organisations who are working to make these people’s lives as comfortable and secure as possible. Every single one of them has given so much to Devon, so it is only right that we give something back.”
“Our aim is to now work towards ‘Gold’ status, by improving our provisions of career based and personal support even more.”
