Communities across Devon to benefit as two popular grant funds return

Community groups across Devon can now apply for a share of £235,000 as Devon County Council reopens two popular grant schemes to support grassroots projects and activities for young people.

Applications are open now for grants of up to £1,000 from the Growing Communities Fund and the Places To Go, Things To Do Fund, helping local organisations strengthen communities and improve opportunities for children and young people aged 11-25.

The funding has already helped deliver everything from warm community hubs and food support to clubs and activities that give young people safe places to go and positive things to do.

Since launching in 2022, the Growing Communities Fund has supported 732 projects, awarding more than £1.25 million to community‑led schemes that reduce isolation, improve wellbeing and help people cope with rising living costs.

In the past year 83 projects shared more than £75,000 in funding.

Its success prompted the creation of the Places To Go, Things To Do Fund under the new administration last year. The new fund was designed by young people, for young people, and recognises that, in many communities, there is a shortage of affordable activities.

Last year £158,704 went to 131 projects, helping community groups deliver inclusive activities for young people across the county.

The Growing Communities Fund focuses on projects that bring people together, provide warm and welcoming spaces, tackle food poverty and support mental health and wellbeing, while the Places To Go, Things To Do Fund supports activities that help young people build confidence, develop skills and feel connected to their communities.

Councillor Cheryl Cottle‑Hunkin, Cabinet Member for Rural Affairs at Devon County Council, said:

“Devon’s greatest strength is its people and the communities they build together. By investing in our young people and supporting grassroots groups, we’re helping to create safer, stronger places and giving children and young people the foundations they need to thrive.

“I’ve been incredibly inspired by the Devon Youth Council and the role they’ve played in helping to administer these funds. The care, insight and commitment they’ve shown in vetting applications has been outstanding, ensuring the funding genuinely reflects the needs of young people across Devon.

“I also want to thank the volunteers who work tirelessly, day after day, to support young people in their communities. Their dedication makes a real difference, often quietly and behind the scenes.

“The response to both the Growing Communities Fund and our Places to Go, Things to Do Fund has been fantastic. These grants are helping to inspire young people, reduce inequalities, and reach communities in both rural and urban parts of Devon. I’m delighted we’re continuing both funds for another year so we can keep backing the people and organisations enriching lives across the county.”

One of the projects funded last year was Adventure therapy and one of the young people who attended said: “The rising artists camp session made me feel very happy. There should definitely be more activities, especially nones that are free of charge like this, it was fun!”
