Our fleet of gritters is facing challenging conditions overnight with a mix of rain and wintry showers forecast.
Gritting teams will be carrying out multiple treatments on some of the county’s main salting routes as road surface temperatures drop close to or below freezing.
This is expected to be followed by a band of widespread rain and sleet, and the possibility of snow on higher ground, with up to 10cm possible on Dartmoor and Exmoor from around 11pm.
The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning for rain, heavy at times, from midnight tonight until 3pm tomorrow (Friday 1 March).
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said:
“The combination of rain and wintry showers along with low road surfaces temperatures is a cause for concern. With so much water run-off still on roads there is a possibility it will freeze and create hazardous conditions for road users, particularly on minor routes off of the gritting network. However, ice can form on roads whether they have been treated or not. Please take extra care if you are travelling overnight or tomorrow morning and allow plenty of time for your journey.”
Please remember the following advice:
- Never assume a road has been salted. Remember that showers or rain will wash salt off roads leaving them prone to ice, and in extreme cold even salting will not stop ice from forming;
- Allow additional time for your journey.
- Reduce your speed and leave more space between you and the vehicle in front;
- Drive with care and according to the conditions;
- Listen to local radio for updates on current weather conditions.
