The map shows the planned Devon Metro rail strategy for Exeter. It shows existing railway stations, planned new stations and other possible new stations longer term, as well as the connecting routes.
From Exeter St Davids, on the main line southbound to Plymouth and Torbay there are stations currently at St Thomas, and Newton Abbot. The new Marsh Barton station will be the next stop after St Thomas. At Newton Abbot main line trains continue down to Plymouth, whilst the branch line heads down to Torbay. A new station at Edginswell will provide a stop in between Newton Abbot and Torbay.
Longer term there is the possibility of a new station at Cullompton, for northbound trains on the main line from Exeter St David’s (heading to Bristol and beyond).
Existing stations at Barnstaple and Okehampton are served by trains on the branch lines out of Exeter St Davids.
The existing stations of Exeter Central and St James’ Park are served by the mainline heading East from Exeter St Davids. After St James’ Park the mainline continues on towards Axminster, with stops at existing stations at Pinhoe and Cranbrook. A branch line serves existing stations on the route to Exmouth – Polsloe Bridge, Digby and Sowton, Newcourt and Topsham. Longer term there is the possibility of another new station at Monkerton and Exeter Business Park, in between Polsloe Bridge and Digby and Sowton.
