The town\u2019s development can be seen in its layout. The circuit of the Saxon walls can be seen as well as the Norman castle that was built on top of earlier residential properties. The medieval church dominates much of the town centre and the market square is also prominent. Many were at the forefront of English commerce in the medieval and post-medieval periods. Some originated before then as Royal strongholds in the Saxon and Norman periods. All have and continue to provide a variety of services to their rural hinterlands as well as being \u2018home\u2019 to many of Devon\u2019s citizens. Their architecture, archaeology and street plans tell the story of their origins and how they have developed over three millennia of town life in Devon.<\/p>\n<p>Working w<a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2016\/02\/Historic-England-Logo-e1454947429554.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1235 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2016\/02\/Historic-England-Logo-e1454947429554.jpg\" alt=\"Historic England Logo\" width=\"150\" height=\"48\" \/><\/a>ith Historic England (formerly English Heritage), the Cornwall Archaeological Unit, AC Archaeology, South West Archaeology and SLR Consulting, we have undertaken an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historicengland.org.uk\/research\/approaches\/research-methods\/characterisation-2\/urban-characterisation\/\" rel=\"noopener\">extensive urban survey <\/a>of 17 of Devon\u2019s historic market and coastal towns.
