Devon is widely celebrated for the great beauty and diversity of its landscapes, for its numerous historic settlements, ancient buildings and archaeological sites. This historic environment is worth treasuring for its own sake and for the information and pleasure that it provides now and for future generations\"An<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The historic environment includes a wide range of evidence that our ancestors have left \u2013 from extensive urban streetscapes and rural landscapes to individual structures such as signposts or standing stones and finds of Roman coins or prehistoric stone tools. It also includes the palaeoenvironmental resource \u2013 evidence of past landscapes and human impacts upon them. With continuous human activity through the ages, the historic environment comprises virtually all of Devon’s rural landscape and its towns, villages and buildings.<\/p>\n

Under Devon County Council\u2019s Strategic Plan, and national rural development and planning policy, the Historic Environment Team promotes the protection, appropriate enhancement and enjoyment of archaeological sites and monuments, historic buildings and historic landscapes and townscapes. It also promotes sustainable access to them.<\/p>\n

The Historic Environment Team maintains the Devon County Historic Environment Record<\/a>, and provides related specialist advice on development management, land management and other historic environment matters. It also works with communities and partners to promote projects that research, record, manage and interpret Devon\u2019s rich heritage.<\/p>\n
