{"id":262,"date":"2013-10-29T11:25:46","date_gmt":"2013-10-29T11:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/?page_id=262"},"modified":"2017-02-02T15:43:31","modified_gmt":"2017-02-02T15:43:31","slug":"chudleigh-fort-bideford","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/explore-devons-heritage\/chudleigh-fort-bideford\/","title":{"rendered":"Chudleigh Fort, Bideford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1642, during the Civil War, the Parliamentarian Captain (later General) Chudleigh built an eight-gun fort at East-the-Water which, along with another fort on the west side of the river, defended Bideford and the river approaches.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Chudleigh-Fort.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-264\" alt=\"Chudleigh Fort, 1985 (\u00a9 Frances Griffith, Devon County Council)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Chudleigh-Fort-240x122.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Chudleigh-Fort-240x122.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Chudleigh-Fort-800x407.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Chudleigh-Fort.jpg 902w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>The fort is a five-sided platform with a stone-rubble retaining wall and parapet with 14 gun-ports.\u00a0 It was largely rebuilt in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, which is probably the date of the granite plaque with lead lettering reading:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>FORT ERECTED BY PARLIAMENTARY FORCES COMMANDED BY MAJOR-GEN.
