Photo: 23\/12\/86 Frances Griffith, Devon County Council.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Devon\u2019s long-distance trails are a great way to experience the county. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk\/walksdb\/95\/\" rel=\"noopener\">The South West Coast Path <\/a>will take you to stunning prehistoric cliff castles, limekilns and lookout stations, and the mighty Palmerston forts near Plymouth. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastdevonway.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">East Devon Way<\/a> wanders through Bronze Age round-barrow cemeteries and past Woodbury Castle hillfort. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamarvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/TVAONBDiscoveryTrailUploadLoRes.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Tamar Valley Discovery Trail<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamarvalley.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/Welcome-to-TT.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Tamar Trails<\/a> lead to historic river quays and some of Devon\u2019s finest industrial heritage. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitdevon.co.uk\/northdevon\/explore\/tarka-trail\" rel=\"noopener\">Tarka Trail<\/a> steams from Braunton to Meeth using the historic railway lines of North Devon. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.exploredevon.info\/activities\/walk\/long-walks\/two-castles-trail\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Two Castles Trail<\/a> links the strongholds of Okehampton and Launceston.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.landscapesforlife.org.uk\/about-aonbs\/visit-aonbs\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Devon\u2019s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty<\/a> provide information and visitor guides to the archaeological heritage of these premier protected landscapes. But if you are interested in Devon\u2019s many castles, stately homes and their great parks and gardens, then check out what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/visit\" rel=\"noopener\">English Heritage<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationaltrust.org.uk\/visit\/places\/find-a-place-to-visit\/#?findPlace=Devon&amp;type=&amp;view=undefined\" rel=\"noopener\">National Trust<\/a> have to offer.<\/p>\n<p>Local groups such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/devonarchaeologicalsociety.org.uk\/das\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=9&amp;Itemid=9\" rel=\"noopener\">Devon Archaeological Society<\/a> \u00a0provide information and guides on archaeological sites, active excavation projects, events, lectures and open days.<\/p>\n<p>Devon\u2019s museums have displays on the major archaeological discoveries that have been made over the years. The main collections are held by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rammuseum.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Albert Memorial Museum<\/a>, Exeter, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barnstaplemuseum.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plymouth.gov.uk\/homepage\/creativityandculture\/museums\/museumpcmag.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Plymouth City Museum<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.torquaymuseum.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Torbay Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Devon County Historic Environment Team recommends a few sites to visit; some are well known but others are\u00a0less so.
