For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Linear-archaeological-features-in-a-subsoiled-field.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-331\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Linear-archaeological-features-in-a-subsoiled-field-180x240.jpg\" alt=\"Linear archaeological features in a subsoiled field\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Linear-archaeological-features-in-a-subsoiled-field-180x240.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Linear-archaeological-features-in-a-subsoiled-field-450x600.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2013\/10\/Linear-archaeological-features-in-a-subsoiled-field.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a>Subsoiling and disturbance of soil below the usual cultivation depth to address soil compaction is extremely destructive of archaeological sites<\/li>\n<li>New fencing, watercourse crossings, gates, hardcore tracks, sediment ponds, biobeds, underwater storage tanks and feeding\/watering facilities also have potential to impact on archaeological features.<\/li>\n<li>Relocating arable or overwintering cattle to flatter land can increase the risk of damage to archaeology on previously well-preserved sites.<\/li>\n<li>New <a title=\"Hedges and the historic environment\" href=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/land-management\/hedges-and-the-historic-environment\/\">hedgebanks <\/a>can normally be planned to respect and strengthen existing landscape character if the historic character of the landscape is taken into account and material is not taken from archaeologically sensitive sites.<\/li>\n<li>Creation of <a title=\"Woodland and the historic environment\" href=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/land-management\/woodland-and-the-historic-environment\/\">woodland<\/a> has an effect on landscape character and potential impact on buried archaeological remains.<\/li>\n<li>Works to separate clean and dirty water and roof over yards may impact on historic farmstead character.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can <a title=\"The Historic Environment team\" href=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/historicenvironment\/\">contact us<\/a>\u00a0on plans to change management, for information on archaeological features, and how to limit damage to them and the character of the historic landscape.<\/p>\n<p>CSF capital grants are conditional on avoiding damage to the historic environment (section\u00a04.1 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/guide-to-countryside-stewardship-water-capital-grants-2015\/guide-to-countryside-stewardship-water-capital-grants-2015\" rel=\"noopener\">handbook<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Check that the work won\u2019t damage features such as:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 biodiversity;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 landscape; or<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 historic environment.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Local CSFOs can help with this and advise what capital work could be carried out and help identify opportunities for water quality improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Assess the environmental impact<\/p>\n<p>Assess the impact of the work on the environment and include the findings with the application.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the impact of the work on environmental features such as traditional farm buildings or bank-side vegetation. For example, if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0concreting a historic cobbled yard this may damage or destroy historic features;<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0fencing watercourses may damage bank side vegetation if it\u2019s no longer grazed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reduce the environmental impact<\/p>\n<p>Make <strong>sure capital items are placed so they don\u2019t damage historic or archaeological features.
