Codes of Conduct<\/h2>\n
The Canal Ranger Service has established two Codes of Conduct to promote the safe and considerate use of both the towpath and the canal channel by all users.<\/p>\n
These codes have been developed in partnership with representatives from boating, angling, and wildlife interest groups, and have been endorsed by the Canal\u2019s Joint Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n\nCanal Rangers at the Grand Western Canal Country Park, Tiverton, have been granted limited policing powers under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
The CSAS has operated across Devon and Cornwall since 2005.<\/p>\n
These accreditations enable Rangers to assist in addressing low-level anti-social behaviour and to support the promotion of a safe and secure environment for all canal users and the wider community.<\/p>\n

\nAccredited Powers<\/h3>\n
The powers conferred under the scheme are proportionate to the needs of the canal and surrounding area and include the authority to:<\/p>\n

Failure to comply with such a request constitutes a formal offence.<\/p>\n

Who has priority on the towpath?<\/h3>\n
A horse-drawn barge operates between the Canal Basin in Tiverton and Tiverton Road Bridge near Halberton. It has priority over all other users.<\/p>\n
Cyclists must dismount and walk under bridges along this section, as visibility is restricted. Stopping the horse may cause the barge to lose steering.<\/p>\n
At all other bridges:<\/p>\n

- Pedestrians have priority<\/li>\n
- Cyclists must take care and are advised to dismount<\/li>\n
- Dismounting is mandatory at the two bridges in Sampford Peverell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n

Are dogs allowed?<\/h3>\n
Yes, dogs are permitted within the Country Park. However:<\/p>\n

- Dogs must be kept under control at all times<\/li>\n
- They must not disturb wildlife, other dogs, or visitors<\/li>\n
- Dogs must be kept out of adjacent farmland<\/li>\n
- Owners must clean up after their dogs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Dog waste bins are provided at key access points. Failure to clean up after a dog is an offence and may result in a fine of up to \u00a31,000.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n

No. Swimming and bathing are prohibited under the Country Park byelaws.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n

Metal detecting is currently permitted in publicly accessible areas (e.g. picnic sites and towpath verges), subject to the following conditions:<\/p>\n

- Excavation of the towpath surface is not permitted<\/li>\n
- Detecting is not allowed in the Canal Basin (Tiverton) from 1 April to 30 October<\/li>\n
- Significant finds must be reported to Devon County Council (via the Canal Ranger Service<\/a>) and<\/u> to the Devon Finds Officer<\/a> and find locations must be accurately recorded.<\/li>\n
- Detectorists must adhere to the Treasure Act 1996 Code of Conduct<\/strong> and the\u00a0Portable Antiquities Scheme Code of Conduct for Responsible Metal Detecting<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
All finds remain the property of Devon County Council unless otherwise agreed.<\/p>\n
Permission may be withdrawn in future due to environmental funding conditions or management concerns.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n
