The team includes the Canal Manager (Mark Baker) and Canal Rangers (Jo Roberts and Craig Saunderson).<\/p>\n<p>Based at the Canal Basin in Tiverton, the Rangers carry out essential work across the entire Country Park, guided by the Grand Western Canal Management Plan.<\/p>\n<p>The Ranger Service is supported by a dedicated group of volunteers, as well as school and college placements, who assist with practical tasks and events. It\u2019s a great way to get fresh air, stay active, learn new skills and make a real difference to this beautiful nature reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The Ranger Service is always looking for enthusiastic conservation volunteers to help with the day\u2011to\u2011day care of the Country Park. After many decades of being trimmed annually with a tractor\u2011mounted flail, sections of the hedge have become thin and open in places.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hedge laying<\/strong> is a traditional countryside skill that restores hedges by encouraging thick regrowth from the base. This creates a dense, healthy hedge that provides excellent wildlife habitat and forms an effective stock\u2011proof barrier.<\/p>\n<p>Hedge laying is especially popular with our volunteers, who spend many enjoyable days working on the hedges during the winter season. This work created a wide, flat and dry surface that can be enjoyed by visitors of all abilities throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, grass has encroached along the edges of the towpath, narrowing the stone surface. In addition, the verges have gradually risen as plant material has decomposed, leaving some sections slightly sunken and prone to puddling.<\/p>\n<p>To maintain good access, periodic resurfacing and edge\u2011clearing works are required. Excavators are used to scrape back the encroaching vegetation in the worst\u2011affected areas, and in busier stretches\u2014such as between the Canal Basin and Tidcombe Bridge, and from Crownhill Bridge to the Aqueduct\u2014the towpath is fully resurfaced.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<li class=\"accordion-item\" data-accordion-item>\r\n<a href=\"#mac4\" id=\"head4\" role=\"tab\" class=\"accordion-title\" aria-controls=\"mac4\">Dredging <\/a><div id=\"mac4\" aria-labelledby=\"head4\" class=\"accordion-content\" data-tab-content><div class=\"targetclass\" >\n<h3>Dredging<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grandwesterncanal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2015\/11\/gwc-dredgingsmaller1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1777\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grandwesterncanal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2015\/11\/gwc-dredgingsmaller1.jpg\" alt=\"Canal dredging.\" width=\"266\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>Over time, the Canal naturally builds up silt from decomposing plant material and soil washed in from surrounding roads and farmland. Without periodic dredging, the Canal would eventually become too shallow for boating and angling, and its wildlife habitats would decline.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2002 and 2007, most of the Canal was dredged following significant investment from Devon County Council, Mid Devon District Council, and the <strong>EU Interreg IIIb programme<\/strong>. The work was carried out in carefully planned phases to reduce disturbance to wildlife. Monitoring afterwards showed an increase in the variety of water plants \u2014 an essential part of the Canal\u2019s food chain \u2014 and ensured that boating and angling can continue for many years to come.<\/p>\n<p>The Ranger Service also works closely with neighbouring landowners to reduce future soil erosion into the Canal. These culverts allow water from streams and ditches to flow beneath the Canal, but over time they can become blocked with silt and debris. Water enters the Canal from several different sources, all of which must be monitored closely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rainfall<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Temporary overland flows<\/strong> during heavy rain, including ditches and road drainage<\/li>\n<li><strong>Land drains<\/strong> from surrounding farmland along the offside bank<\/li>\n<li><strong>Permanent watercourses<\/strong> that discharge into the Canal<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spring water feeds<\/strong> from the canal bed between Fenacre Bridge and Lowdwells<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flood water<\/strong> from overtopping watercourses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following the embankment breach in November 2012, major improvements were made to the Canal\u2019s water\u2011management systems to reduce the risk of future failures.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>How Water Levels Are Controlled<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grandwesterncanal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2020\/04\/Tilting-Weir.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2550 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grandwesterncanal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2020\/04\/Tilting-Weir.jpg\" alt=\"Tilting Weir at Burlescombe.\" width=\"594\" height=\"372\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grandwesterncanal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2020\/04\/Tilting-Weir.jpg 594w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grandwesterncanal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/107\/2020\/04\/Tilting-Weir-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canal levels are kept within a safe and acceptable range using a combination of structures operated by the Rangers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fixed weirs<\/strong> \u2013 allow water to overflow safely into nearby watercourses once levels rise<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tilting weir<\/strong> \u2013 remotely controlled to fine\u2011tune water levels<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guillotine sluice<\/strong> \u2013 located near Fossend Bridge, Burlescombe<\/li>\n<li><strong>Penstock sluices<\/strong> \u2013 located at Snakes Wood near Tiverton, and at Fossend Bridge, Burlescombe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These structures allow excess water to be released in a controlled way, helping protect embankments and maintain stable conditions throughout the Canal.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Monitoring Leaks and Water Loss<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Small\u2011scale leakage is common in most years and is often detected by damp patches or puddles at the base of embankments. When leaks are found, Rangers take action to seal them wherever possible. Devon County Council swiftly committed funding not only to repair the embankment but also to upgrade key infrastructure to reduce the risk of future breaches. Each board includes up\u2011to\u2011date information on activities, events, safety and the Canal\u2019s Codes of Conduct.
