The oak-clad, elliptical building provides a great starting point for visits to the canal and houses a fascinating range of displays, bringing to life the Canal\u2019s rich natural and industrial history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information is provided on the wide range of activities that can be enjoyed at the Canal and children are sure to love the centre\u2019s interactive games and hands\u2013on activities. The displays were developed by Devon Wildlife Enterprises and Freeline Graphics and include some older photographs of the canal have been donated to the centre by local people following an appeal in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within the touchscreen system, visitors can explore the canal using a series of 360 degree photographs, taken at points along its length, and with on screen controls, take in views all around including local landmarks off the immediate towpath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch an introduction to the touchscreen system below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\" style=\"margin-right:0;margin-left:0\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"DSCN0252\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/8pYZo3pvW3k?feature=oembed&#038;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Designed by the Council\u2019s property agents NPS South West Ltd, and built by Devon-based Skinner Construction, the visitor centre is elliptical, using natural and traditional materials including green oak cladding and terne-coated steel that will weather to look like lead; all helping the building to quickly settle into its landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-frame.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-frame-300x163.jpg\" alt=\"visitor centre frame\" class=\"wp-image-2546\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.8442622950819672;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-frame-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-frame-640x347.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-frame.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below ground, the centre is built on a subterranean Grade II-listed limekiln. Considerable archaeological excavation had to go into work to first pinpoint the exact location and size of the protected limekiln, and to ensure that the visitor centre\u2019s foundations did not damage in any way the kiln beneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-Sign.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"185\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-Sign-185x300.jpg\" alt=\"Grand Western Canal visitor centre sign\" class=\"wp-image-2547\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.6159695817490495;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-Sign-185x300.jpg 185w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-Sign-369x600.jpg 369w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/grand-western-canal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/200\/2020\/04\/Visitor-Centre-Sign.jpg 392w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twelve piles, driven 6 metres (almost 20 feet) into the ground provide foundations for the building with a sophisticated steel frame, sitting across the pile caps, that supports a substantial section of the building with a cantilever. The building above ground is environmentally designed and insulated in ways that mean no heating or air conditioning is required.
