Fund description:

Applications for funding from the EU LIFE programme in 2020 are now invited, with additional measures to take account of the COVID-19 pandemic. LIFE is the EU programme for environment and nature conservation projects.

UK organisations can continue to bid for EU LIFE funding in the 2020 call, even if the timetable for the call stretches into 2021 and beyond the transition period.

LIFE is divided into two sub-programmes:

  • LIFE-Environment includes support for environment & resource efficiency, nature & biodiversity, environmental information and governance.
  • LIFE-Climate Action will support regional low-carbon and climate resilience strategies as well as small-scale climate projects from SMEs, NGOs and local authorities.

The grant rate for most projects is 55% but can be up to 75% for nature and biodiversity projects to improve the conservation status of priority habitats or species listed in the EU’s birds and habitats directives.

Applications can be made by public bodies, private commercial organisations and private non-commercial organisations (including NGOs). Organisations can choose to run a project on their own or can co-operate with other organisations within the UK or from other European countries.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the LIFE programme has extended deadlines and included additional measures such as the scope for successful projects to be able to offer grants to small local initiatives that contribute to the objectives of the wider project.

There is an online Virtual Information Day for potential applicants on 30 April 2020 and support is available from the JNCC which is the UK contact point for the LIFE programme.

There is a lot of competition for LIFE funding and so projects need to be well-prepared, innovative with a strong focus on sharing and disseminating expertise and good practice.
