Not only does it protect the child who receives it, but it also helps shield vulnerable groups—such as unborn babies, infants too young to be vaccinated, and individuals with weakened immune systems who cannot receive the vaccine themselves.

Early years settings play a key role in preventing the spread of measles. By encouraging parents to ensure their children are up to date with their vaccinations, providers can help reduce the risk of outbreaks. In the event of a suspected case of measles, settings should promptly contact their local Health Protection Team (HPT), who will offer tailored advice and support to manage the situation and prevent further transmission.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has published a range of resources:

UKHSA Blog: What is measles and why is it so important we are all up to date with our MMR vaccine? What is measles and why is it so important we’re all up to date with our MMR vaccine? – UK Health Security Agency

Communications Toolkit: Measles Toolkit on Google Drive – includes key information, messaging guidance, and downloadable materials such as social media graphics for use with parents and carers. Measles – Google Drive

Providers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with these materials and share them with staff and families where appropriate.
