They also provide essential green corridors for which these species disperse. Furthermore, for many people wildflowers on our roadside verges provide essential personal wellbeing and contribute greatly to their feeling of wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 1930s, 97% of the UK&#8217;s wildflower meadows have been lost or modified. This loss of habitat has meant our pollinating insects have suffered steep declines and 87 species of wildflower are threatened with extinction.<\/p>\n<p>Appropriate management of our roadside verges is essential. Without careful management, wildflowers on our road verges can be lost through too frequent cutting, or outcompeted by brambles, scrub and vigorous coarse grasses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_755\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-755\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2016\/11\/imageedit_2_4558246854.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-755 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2016\/11\/imageedit_2_4558246854-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"View of country lane with bluebells and other colourful flowers in hedgebank\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2016\/11\/imageedit_2_4558246854-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2016\/11\/imageedit_2_4558246854-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2016\/11\/imageedit_2_4558246854-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2016\/11\/imageedit_2_4558246854-640x480.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2016\/11\/imageedit_2_4558246854.jpg 1010w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-755\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flowering roadside hedgebank in Westleigh, North Devon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Devon County Council grass cutting policy<\/h2>\n<p>It is Devon County Council policy that grass cutting on road verges is only carried out when deemed necessary for the following reasons: to maintain visibility areas\/splays for highway users and\/or to provide forward visibility to signs.<\/p>\n<p>The health and safety of road traffic users is Devon County Council\u2019s main priority, but Devon County Council is always exploring opportunities with our principal Highways contractors as to whether it is possible for our road verges to be cut for the benefit of wildlife without incurring unreasonable costs to the tax payer.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the frequency of cutting, Devon County Council will cut road verges within visibility splays on the following schedule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rural roads on the priority network (60 mph roads), such as A and B class roads, are cut 2-3 times a year between mid-May and mid-June. Currently, there are 112 Special Verges located right throughout Devon, each one with its own specific survey and management card.<\/p>\n<p>The location of all of Devon\u2019s special verges can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/redirect.devon.gov.uk?link=EnvView\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\">Devon County Council\u2019s environmental viewer<\/a>, under the Ecology\/Geology tab. Produced by the Axe Vale and District Conservation Society, 2015.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tarka County Trust&#8217;s\u00a0 <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tarkacountrytrust.org.uk\/love-b.html\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Life on the Verge&#8217;<\/a> HLF project within the North Devon Biosphere, began in November 2016 and has helped local communities to manage verges for wildlife. Plantlife has produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantlife.org.uk\/uk\/our-work\/publications\/road-verge-management-guide\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;Managing Grassland Road Verges Best Practice
