Use lefthand dropdown arrowhead to use various search options, such as postcode, BNG locator (British National Grid), etc. Then press return or magnifying glass and the map will then zoom to your area of interest. On a PC\/laptopn you can use the mouse to drag map to area of interest.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1679\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-Search-dropdown.png\" alt=\"Search bar with dropdown options\" width=\"196\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1681\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-zoom-.png\" alt=\"Zoom control icon + -\" width=\"43\" height=\"94\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Zoom<\/strong> control. You can zoom using the \u2018+\u2019 and \u2018-\u2018 buttons. If on a PC\/laptop you can use scroll using the mouse wheel to zoom. You can also lasso an area by \u2018Shift left mouse click and drag cursor\u2019 to zoom into an area. Zoom into an area of interest to reduce the amount of data the map has to load. Loading time will increase if you a) zoom out to view a large area, such as district or County level and b) select\/tick on many layers.<\/p>\n<p>To pan around the map, click\/touch the map and move, release to stop.<\/p>\n<p>4. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1683\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-home-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer Home Icon\" width=\"43\" height=\"47\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Reset to the full map extent, <strong>home<\/strong>. Do not tick too many layers when zoomed out to a large scale, eg viewing at County or District level, as it will take a longer time for the data to load.<\/p>\n<p>5. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1684\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-location-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer Location icon\" width=\"39\" height=\"36\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use the GPS location to position the map at your <strong>current location<\/strong>. Click <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1685\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-stop-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer stop icon\" width=\"32\" height=\"31\" \/> to de-select GPS.<\/p>\n<p>6. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1686\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-ruler-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer Ruler measuring tool icon\" width=\"42\" height=\"45\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Measure<\/strong> tool, allows measurement of distance and area. Select measure tool then click on map for start point and click once for subsequent points, and double click for end point. Click Clear to stop using this tool or click icon again to de-select.<\/p>\n<p>7. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1687\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-print-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer print icon\" width=\"44\" height=\"46\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Print<\/strong> the visible map.<\/p>\n<p>8. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1688\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-add-data-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer add data icon\" width=\"41\" height=\"42\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Add data<\/strong> function, to add any\u00a0external data or data of your own.<\/p>\n<p>9. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1689\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-select-tool-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer select tool icon\" width=\"40\" height=\"40\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Select<\/strong>. Use this tool to select a feature, such as a point, polyline or polygon, of the data you have opened in the layer list. In the Select window, tick the layer of interest and then on the map \u2018Press down to start and let go to finish\u2019 to drag over a feature of interest to select.<\/p>\n<p>10. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1690\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-share-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer share icon\" width=\"40\" height=\"40\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Share<\/strong> map. Creates:<br \/>\na) a weblink to this app (includes options such as select current map extent, add a marker on the map and remember layers visibility) and<br \/>\nb) a weblink for embedding this app in a website.<\/p>\n<p>11.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2021\/05\/Viewer-Legend.png\" alt=\"Legend icon for Environment Viewer\" width=\"39\" height=\"39\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Legend<\/strong> (top right), displays selected layers, explains the colours and symbols visible on the map.<\/p>\n<p>12. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1308\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2021\/05\/Viewer-Layers.png\" alt=\"Layers icon for Environment Viewer\" width=\"45\" height=\"47\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To view data held by Devon County Council, click <strong>Layer List<\/strong> icon. A Layer List box should pop up showing the top tier groups of datasets.\u00a0 You\u2019ll see these are grouped under environmental topic headings e.g. ecology, historic environment etc. You can expand the list by clicking on the arrow to the left of the ticked box.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Layers list (top right), allows map layers to be switched on and off.<\/li>\n<li>Many layers can be selected to view at one time.\u00a0 Layers higher up the list will appear over the top of layers lower down the list. You may have to uncheck higher layers to see lower layers hidden underneath on the map. The layer position in the layer list is random and does not infer a level of importance or value.<\/li>\n<li>The 3 dots to the right side of the layer provide extra functions, allowing you to zoom to the complete layer and change the transparency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1691\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-three-dots-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer view with three dots\" width=\"320\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-three-dots-icon.png 418w, https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-three-dots-icon-300x123.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where a layer has several tiers of layers, all the upper-tier groups need to be ticked on to view the lower tier layers.<\/li>\n<li>If a layer title appears as faded grey text in the Layer List, zoom in on the map as some layers only appear on the map when zoomed in to specific scales.<\/li>\n<li>Note that a large dataset will take time to load, and if you open several large (data-rich) datasets (tick several layers) that will also slow the Viewer, especially if you have low broadband speed.\u00a0 \u00a0If you zoom in to a specific location (such as farm or parish level) and open the layers there, it will be quicker to load onto the map view than trying to open and view the same data at a larger scale (such as county or district level).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>13. <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1692\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-filter-cone-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer filter cone icon\" width=\"47\" height=\"47\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Filters<\/strong> the data displayed on the map, standard filters are available for Historic Environment.<\/p>\n<p>14.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2021\/05\/Viewer-Basemap-Gallery.png\" alt=\"Basemap Gallery icon for Environment Viewer\" width=\"42\" height=\"39\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Base map gallery<\/strong> (top right), allows basemap layers to be switched on and off. Aerial maps and historic maps are found here. The Master Raster (Greyscale) is useful to reduce colour confusion when lots of data layers are open.<\/p>\n<p>15.\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1693\" src=\"http:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/environment\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/112\/2023\/08\/Viewer-grid-ref-icon.png\" alt=\"Viewer grid ref icon\" width=\"172\" height=\"30\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Coordinates bar. The data is either owned and managed by Devon County Council, or derived from data given by other organisations (such as the Environment Agency, Natural England and Devon Biodiversity Records Centre, amongst others) who allow Devon County Council to display their data on this website.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that the Environment Viewer has been live since spring\/summer 2016 and is being improved all the time.
