Bringing Bercow 10 to life across the Devon STP

On Wednesday 16th May members of the Improving Access to Communication Services/Support reference group met and reaffirmed their pledge to make change happen for Children and Young People with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) across the Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP).

The meeting took place during Mental Health Awareness week and so it was extremely apt that Dr Val Brooks provided a detailed insight into the link between language difficulties and mental health, as highlighted in the Bercow Ten Years On report that states:

  • 81% of children with emotional and behavioural disorders have unidentified language difficulties.
  • Young people referred to mental health services are three times more likely to have SLCN than those who have not been referred.
