Barley Lane, Exeter

Barley Lane School is designated SEMH and works with and for diverse children and young people and their families across key stages 2, 3 and 4. The school is a day school with up to 80 places.

Common themes of need are ACE, ADHD, ASD, PDA, ODD SpLD and access to SALT but equally many of our young people simply need the emotional security of a smaller and more child-centred school and stable relationships with skilled, caring and optimistic adults.

Classes are small and nurturing and whilst we have specialist teachers many of our young people stay within a primary model and often with the same teacher over time as this stability undoubtedly promotes their wellbeing and so enables them to feel happy and so learn. Where children are particularly complex and sometimes vulnerable there is limited access to very small and highly supported groups.

The school’s prevailing culture is rooted in building safe, positive and compassionate relationships and recognizing the children’s innate worth; celebrating their successes but also the many challenges they overcome and it seeks to promote and embed the children’s happiness and wellbeing. There is also more targeted and specialist support and a school counsellor, staff trained in ELSA and access to skilled one to one mentoring.

The curriculum is increasingly bespoke and personalised and also necessarily broad to accommodate a diverse and able student body: it is both academic with GCSEs in core subjects and a variety of accredited vocational courses at college is offered from year 9. The curriculum is also enriched with many activities from DofE to drumming, mountain biking to opera and this contributes to the young people’s happiness and wellbeing and so their engagement in learning; they have fun.

Some of our young people return to mainstream school and almost all successfully transition to college: some onwards to university others to training and to work of all kinds.

About our school

We know your child is talented, unique and complex. The team here is a dedicated and caring group and they work hard with parents and carers and professionals to understand and support each young person individually and better.

The children’s safety and happiness are paramount: the curriculum is broad and varied, both academic and vocational with a range of GCSEs and vocational qualifications. Our students can also access a variety of enriching experiences from abseiling (we offer the DofE award too) to opera.

We want school to be a place where children and young people want to be because they feel valued and cared for but also challenged and supported to develop as learners and as people.

Marland School (Barnstaple, Bideford and Peters Marland)

This three-site school caters for children and young people in year 2 to year 11 (aged between 7 and 16) who have SEMH needs described on an EHCP.

  • Primary day school (Bideford): Co-educational Y2-Y7.
  • Secondary day school (Barnstaple): Co-educational Y7-Y11.
  • Residential school (Peters Marland) Y6-Y11, boys only, 5 day/4 night weekly residential.

The school and Local Authority are currently reviewing numbers and age ranges.

All three schools provide a broad and balanced personalised curriculum with daily focus on positive social/emotional regulation and development as a priority.

Due to their complexity of need, students are taught in small, well supported groups (and occasionally on an individual basis where such support is additionally commissioned). All students can access subject specific subject teaching.

Where students improve to such an extent that their needs would be better met in a mainstream school this can be facilitated via the annual review process. Most students achieve a broad range of national qualifications and go on to successfully transition to a post-16 further education college when they leave Marland at the end of year 11.

Our mission statement

Our students are an untapped resource of positive potential. Our aim, in partnership with parents/carers and support professionals, is to fully meet the individual needs of every child or young person.

To personalise our positive based approaches to enable all to flourish and develop into happy, independent, emotionally literate, well educated, socially confident and productive members of society.
