Information about coronavirus is available in different languages and formats:

Ceremonies

Devon Registration Service is no longer able to conduct ceremonies. This is due to the government’s advice regarding social distancing and will affect all types of ceremony.

This will be the case for the foreseeable future but further updates will be published here.

Please note that with immediate effect the Service will not be calling couples back to rebook a ceremony. Ceremony venues have been asked to collate information and issue it to the Service.

Please do not call Devon Registration Service as it will not be returned – please deal directly with your ceremony venue.

The only exception to this is for any ceremonies booked at one of the following venues:

  • Exmouth Town Hall
  • Larkbeare House
  • Taw View
  • Follaton House
  • Caddsdown Business Centre
  • County Hall, Exeter
  • Devon Register office
  • Tiverton Register office

We will be returning calls for couples whose ceremonies are booked at these venues. If you need to call us to talk about rearranging a ceremony at one of the above venues only please call 0345 155 1002.

Devon Registration Service will be training more staff and obtaining additional registers so that they can accommodate new ceremony dates.

Ceremony confirmation emails will be sent out in the next few weeks.

Your notice of marriage/civil partnership

All appointments for giving notice of marriage have now been postponed and the Service will be contacting those people affected to let them know.

Please do not try to rebook an appointment at this time – further advice will be provided as soon as possible.

Please be aware that a notice of marriage is only valid for the venue named on the notice. If you want to change your ceremony venue you will need to give notice again, pay the required fee and wait at least 28 days.

You should also be aware that a notice of marriage is only valid for 12 months, therefore, if you postpone your ceremony beyond the expiry date you will need to give notice again.

Religious ceremonies

Read the latest guidance for churches on the Church of England website.

Citizenship ceremonies

In line with government advice, citizen ceremonies have also been cancelled and we are contacting people who had bookings to let them know.

It is hoped that more specific guidance from the UK Visa and Immigration Service will be available soon.

Birth registrations

All appointments for birth registrations have now been postponed and the Service will be contacting those people affected to let them know.

Please do not try to rebook an appointment at this time – further advice will be provided as soon as possible.

Due to these exceptional circumstances, you will now be able to make a claim for Child Benefit or Universal Credit prior to a birth being registered.

Death registrations

Death registrations will now be conducted by telephone. Please do not call to book an appointment.

The Registration Service will be provided with next of kin details as well as the medical certificate of cause of death by the doctor/hospital involved and will then contact the person registering the death.

The Certificate for Burial or Cremation (the ‘green form’) which gives permission for burial or an application for cremation will be forwarded directly to the relevant place.

You will also be able to order and pay for death certificates over the phone.
