Recommended insurance position for local councils or community organisations<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

As part of our commitment to supporting organisations taking part in the Road Warden Scheme, we provide\u00a0<\/span>third\u2011party liability insurance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0for approved activities, provided all works are carried out in line with the Road Warden Agreement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The information and table below are designed to help organisations understand what additional insurance they may need to have in place to ensure they are fully covered for the type of work they intend to carry out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Public Liability<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Devon County Council provides public liability cover for activities carried out under the an approved Road Warden Agreement.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Devon County Council’s Public Liability cover applies\u00a0<\/span>only<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to approved Road Warden activities carried out strictly within the scope of the scheme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Local councils or community organisations are strongly advised to maintain their\u00a0<\/span>own Public Liability insurance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to provide protection where:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • an activity falls outside the County Council scheme,<\/span><\/li>\n
  • there has been any deviation from approved procedures, or<\/span><\/li>\n
  • there is uncertainty about the capacity in which the volunteer was acting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Personal Accident<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    We provide a\u00a0<\/span>limited level<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of personal accident cover for Road Warden volunteers\u00a0<\/span>(maximum benefit \u00a35,000)<\/span>. Local councils or community organisations may wish to consider arranging\u00a0<\/span>additional personal accident insurance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to offer higher levels of financial protection for volunteers in the event of serious injury or death. This type of cover operates regardless of fault and complements liability insurance rather than replacing it.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Employers\u2019 Liability (including volunteers)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    Local councils or community organisations should ensure they have\u00a0<\/span>Employers\u2019 Liability insurance that explicitly includes volunteers<\/span><\/b>. This covers injury or illness suffered by volunteers while working under their direction or control.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    All Risks \u2013 tools and equipment<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    Where tools or equipment are owned by a local council or community organisation and issued to volunteers,\u00a0<\/span>all risks insurance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0can be used to cover theft, loss or accidental damage. This includes when items are in use or held by volunteers. It is not compulsory, but it is good practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Vehicle insurance<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    Volunteers who use their\u00a0<\/span>own vehicles<\/span><\/b>\u00a0for Road Warden duties should notify their motor insurer to make sure their policy covers this type of activity, as some insurers may require prior notification or apply restrictions.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
