Guide: How to become a County Councillor

Part 5

Will I get paid?

Councillors do not receive a salary. However, each councillor currently receives a basic annual allowance of £10,970. If you have a position of responsibility, like the chairman of a committee, you may receive an additional allowance. Details of the Members Allowances Scheme can be found in the Constitution.

The allowance is designed to cover expenses you may incur as a councillor such as postage or telephone calls or work within your Constituency. Councillors are also entitled to claim travel and subsistence expenses for ‘approved duties’, for example attending a Committee Meeting at County Hall.
