{"id":75729,"date":"2026-08-14T11:17:45","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T10:17:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/?page_id=75729"},"modified":"2026-08-14T14:55:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T13:55:57","slug":"specialist","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/send-local-offer\/education-and-learning\/support-at-school\/specialist\/","title":{"rendered":"Specialist support in school"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">For some children and young people specialist help and support may be needed to support them in school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Specialist support is where children and young people need <strong>highly personalised and planned support and intervention<\/strong>, over and above ordinarily available inclusive and targeted provision, to help them make progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default wp-block-paragraph\">Specialist support and intervention may be needed when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a pupil has a life-long learning difficulty or disability, possibly across several areas of development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a pupil has significant and persistent learning difficulties despite access to appropriate learning opportunities and support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>external expertise and advice is needed to support the school to meet the pupil&#8217;s needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A graduated approach to SEND support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any specialist support planned should build on ordinarily available and targeted provision already in place, using a <strong>graduated approach<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The graduated approach<\/strong> <strong>is a continual cycle of \u2018assess, plan, do, review\u2019, to make sure that the support is working. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Assess<\/strong> &#8211; any additional support needs should be identified by reviewing the child or young person&#8217;s strengths, difficulties and any barriers to learning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plan<\/strong> &#8211; the additional support needed should be planned (including expected outcomes, and timescales)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Do<\/strong> &#8211; the planned support should be put into place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review<\/strong> &#8211; progress against identified outcomes should be reviewed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Support available to schools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each mainstream and special school in Devon has a named&nbsp;<strong>Inclusion Partner<\/strong>&nbsp;from Devon\u2019s Inclusion and Learning Service, who they can ask for help and advice on including children in their setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your child school may also choose to seek additional support from a number of teams or practitioners, for example:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/send-local-offer\/children-and-young-people\/support-at-school\/specialist\/educational-psychology\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Educational Psychology Service<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/support-schools-settings\/send\/areas-of-need\/sensory-and-or-physical\/\">Specialist teachers, for example Teachers of the Deaf (ToD)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.devonscp.org.uk\/early-help\/early-help-information-for-workers\/what-is-early-help-for-families\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Early help support (social care)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specialist teams at <a href=\"https:\/\/childrenandfamilyhealthdevon.nhs.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD)<\/a>, for example Occupational Therapists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/send-local-offer\/education-health-and-care-plans\/what-is-an-ehc-needs-assessment\/\" rel=\"noopener\">EHC needs assessment<\/a> may help identify a child or young person&#8217;s specific support needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/send-local-offer\/education-health-and-care-plans\/\" rel=\"noopener\">education, health and care (EHC) plan<\/a> may be in place to provide extra care and support. The majority of children and young people with EHCPs can be well supported in mainstream schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Different types of school<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although most children and young people with EHCPs can be well supported in mainstream schools, some with more complex or severe needs may need more specialist provision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specialist centres and resource bases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beta.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/send-local-offer\/children-and-young-people\/how-to-choose-a-school\/types-of-school-specialist-centres-and-resource-bases\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Specialist centres and resource bases<\/a> support children and young people who have difficulties related to specific areas of SEND.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special schools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a number special schools located across the county that cater for children and young people with severe and complex special educational needs.
