Participants were asked to generate words and statements they would wish to be included in a shared understanding of co-production for Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside this, some groups discussed co-production generally and raised the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Where and who do we need to embed co-production with?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do you know the co-production is genuine? What is the local area view?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How do we ensure that children understand their role in co-production so that they do not just do what their parents want.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A better online way of working would be helpful in including everybody.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The words and statements generated by the participants are listed below, grouped into connected ideas (duplicated or very similar words and statements are only included once).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that asterisks identify particular words and statements that were agreed by several partners in the room:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is important to Devon in co-production?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Making sure everyone has a\u00a0<strong>voice<\/strong>\u00a0and feels\u00a0<strong>valued<\/strong>, fully\u00a0<strong>involved<\/strong>\u00a0and included as an\u00a0<strong>equal partner, wherever in Devon they live<\/strong>. Power imbalances are considered so there is better\u00a0<strong>equity<\/strong>, which enables working in\u00a0<strong>harmony<\/strong>, so that people feel they can\u00a0<strong>genuinely contribute<\/strong>. Asking the person wearing the shoes helps achieve\u00a0<strong>empowerment<\/strong>. ***********<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Active listening<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201clisten to me\u201d; \u201clisten, listen, listen\u201d)******* \u2013 but you don\u2019t have to agree;\u00a0<strong>challenge<\/strong>\u00a0if you need to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building\u00a0<strong>relationships<\/strong>\u00a0and (natural) communication to create\u00a0<strong>TRUST<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 small things making a big\u00a0<strong>impact<\/strong>.****<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Respecting<\/strong>\u00a0the other person\u2019s situation and\u00a0<strong>understanding their perspective<\/strong>. Being transparent, open-minded and\u00a0<strong>flexible<\/strong>.***<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Involving people and co-producing\u00a0<strong>from the start<\/strong>** \u2013 putting the scaffolding in place.*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensuring co-production is\u00a0<strong>not tokenistic<\/strong>\/lip-service. It should be a true partnership putting the child and family at the heart. Find ways to make sure the child is in the room.**<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those who are specialists, for example caseworkers, holding the\u00a0<strong>knowledge<\/strong>, for example about transitions, EOTAS, EHE, HE, personal budgets, so that parents do not need to become experts in these things.**<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 seeing (noticing), acknowledging that people may have different levels of empathy, and constraints \u2013 \u2018double empathy!\u2019 *<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acceptance that\u00a0<strong>you don\u2019t know everything<\/strong>, or every angle of what others are going through. Trying to understand the lives of other people, children and families.*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working as a\u00a0<strong>team<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>Everyone<\/strong>\u00a0together.* Cooperation. (Not having to battle)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking people\u2019s views into account when making decisions that affect them.\u00a0<strong>Believing parents are the experts on their child<\/strong>. *<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognising\u00a0<strong>the role of parent carers as themselves<\/strong>.* (I am wearing a label that says parent carer. Everyone assumes I am part of PCFD).*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stopping making everything a battle<\/strong>, for example forcing parents to go to appeal.*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is a clear,\u00a0<strong>shared purpose<\/strong>\/instruction based on where partners want to get to, and how (identify their needs). Changing systems and processes together. Genuine intent followed by purposeful\u00a0<strong>action<\/strong>.*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding social constructs, which helps\u00a0<strong>challenge potential unconscious bias<\/strong>, negative judgements, prejudices or perceptions that we might have.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Giving the gift of\u00a0<strong>time<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Explaining things better<\/strong>\u00a0(including for neurodivergent CYP and parent carers) and going at the right pace\/level. Meeting young people where they are. Not rushing in, it is important to be real; authentic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reflection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Connecting. Meaningful engagement<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing services, resources, future plans collaboratively between those who have a lived\/living experience and the professionals who have a duty to deliver and commission care in Devon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding we all have an\u00a0<strong>equal<\/strong>\u00a0stake in the process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>PCF<\/strong>\u00a0being an\u00a0<strong>active partner<\/strong>\u00a0(I heard that PCFs are the only way to get parent carer voices heard. I don\u2019t know ours at all).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hope and positivity. Fun!<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being\u00a0<strong>creative<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 not giving up (showing\u00a0<strong>resilience<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>commitment<\/strong>); breaking the rules for the greater good.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investing\u00a0<strong>resources<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cornerstones event also involved all partners focusing on the presentation and activities to reflect upon their understanding of co-production.
