{"id":69330,"date":"2025-06-13T13:09:26","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T12:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/?page_id=69330"},"modified":"2025-06-13T13:51:10","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T12:51:10","slug":"how-can-i-help-my-child","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/send-local-offer\/types-of-send\/cognition-and-learning\/dyslexia\/how-can-i-help-my-child\/","title":{"rendered":"Dyslexia: How to help your child"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"helping-your-child\">Helping your child or young person<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three areas in which both you and the school can help your child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together it is important to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>help your child to develop strategies to access the curriculum and develop their knowledge and understanding in spite of their literacy difficulties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help your child&nbsp;to develop literacy skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help your child to maintain or develop self esteem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ways-to-help\"><strong>Ways to help<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The most important thing you can do as a parent is to help your child to develop and maintain good self-esteem.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can help raise your child\u2019s feelings of self-worth by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Working with the school to find ways to support and guide your child<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraging your child to talk about their difficulties and successes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Praising your child when they achieve success in any area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraging your child to take up activities at which they can be successful<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding negative comparisons with other children or siblings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoiding talking to others about your child\u2019s difficulties in the child\u2019s hearing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making them aware of positive role models \u2013 the BDA has a good list &#8211; and encourage ambition. Many employers are very supportive to people with dyslexia (for example, the Royal Navy, British Gas)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being positive &#8211; focus on what they can do, not what they can\u2019t.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Helping your child or young person There are three areas in which both you and the school can help your child.
