The school is a day school with up to 80 places.

Common themes of need are ACE, ADHD, ASD, PDA, ODD SpLD and access to SALT, but equally many of our young people simply need the emotional security of a smaller and more child-centred school, and stable relationships with skilled, caring and optimistic adults.

Classes are small and nurturing and whilst we have specialist teachers many of our young people stay within a primary model and often with the same teacher over time as this stability undoubtedly promotes their wellbeing and so enables them to feel happy and so learn. Where children are particularly complex and sometimes vulnerable there is limited access to very small and highly supported groups.

The school’s prevailing culture is rooted in building safe, positive and compassionate relationships and recognizing the children’s innate worth; celebrating their successes but also the many challenges they overcome and it seeks to promote and embed the children’s happiness and wellbeing. There is also more targeted and specialist support and a school counsellor, staff trained in ELSA and access to skilled one to one mentoring.

The curriculum is increasingly bespoke and personalised and also necessarily broad to accommodate a diverse and able student body.

This includes:

Functional literacy – the ability to read confidently, communicate clearly, and engage with the written world as independent adults.

Functional numeracy – the ability to use number, apply mathematical thinking, and manage everyday tasks such as budgeting, measuring, and problem-solving.

Emotional literacy – the capacity to recognise, understand, and express emotions in healthy and constructive ways.

Self-regulation and coping strategies – practical tools to manage stress, navigate challenges, and make positive choices.

Social and relational skills – the ability to build and maintain healthy relationships, resolve conflict, and work collaboratively.

Independence and life skills – confidence in managing daily routines, personal organisation, and decision-making.

Our vision statement

Our vision is to transform the life chances of children with complex SEMH needs by providing a safe, nurturing, and ambitious learning environment where every learner is understood, valued, and challenged. Through positive role modelling, a personalised and aspirational curriculum, strong relational practice, and deep partnerships with families, we empower our pupils to grow into confident, resilient, and independent young people ready for the next stage of their lives.

We aspire to nurture and inspire a safe, inclusive, and thriving learning community where every child and adult feels valued, empowered, and supported to grow – both within our school and in the wider world. We are committed to delivering a curriculum that is ambitious, meaningful, and adapted to each learner, enabling them to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become successful, independent adults.
Guided by core British values, we seek to foster empathy, forgiveness, kindness, and the belief in fresh starts. By modelling these qualities consistently and visibly, we support our pupils to understand others, navigate conflict, and find constructive resolutions.

You can find more information about Barley Lane in our directory of schools.

Bidwell Brook, Dartington

This is a school for learners with an EHCP who have significant cognition and learning needs.

Some of our learners have severe, profound, and multiple disabilities and complex medical needs.
