{"id":20411,"date":"2024-09-10T14:21:09","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T13:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/?page_id=20411"},"modified":"2025-08-06T16:46:56","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T15:46:56","slug":"what-makes-a-good-ehc-plan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/send-local-offer\/education-health-and-care-plans\/what-makes-a-good-ehc-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"What makes a good EHCP"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Professionals across education, health and care have worked alongside the co-chairs of the Devon Parent Carer Forum to agree on a common set of standards about what an EHCP should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has been informed by the thoughts of parents gathered through the forum and gives us a common set of principles that we are all agreeing to work with and use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EHCP charter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A good EHCP will reflect me, my views and my wishes\u2026it will be useful and usable and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>share my views and focus on my aspirations for the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>build on my strengths, support that is already there in school, in my community and at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>will be about my learning, my care and my health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be used by everyone around me \u2013 they will share it, read it, understand it and make sure actions happen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have other plans underneath it \u2013 a school plan with short-term targets that school looks at every term &#8211; there may also be a care plan or a health plan as well (these plans can change quickly)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>use simple language and common sense that we can all understand. It will be copied into accessible communication \u2013 for example, braille \u2013 if needed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a good EHCP will describe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where I am now<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the things I am good at and what I find difficult<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>any diagnosis or conditions I have<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the important things happening in my life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how these things impact my life and my learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where I want to get to<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>have an eye to the future, where I want to get to next and when I am older<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support conversations about my future education, jobs, and independence as I get older<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>have a small set of outcomes that everyone works towards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>include and work towards my aspirations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How I am going to get there<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It will describe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>what will happen to help me make progress; when it happens, how often it happens, who does what and where it happens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>what else I need in school or college or my care and for my health, to help me to feel safe, happy and be ready to learn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A good EHCP will also check I am on track to get there.
