If you think your child might have speech, language and communication needs, you should first talk to a professional involved with your child. This could be, for example, a:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>health visitor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pre-school staff member<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>school staff member<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>speech and language therapist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>community paediatrician<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/childrenandfamilyhealthdevon.nhs.uk\/slt\/\" rel=\"noopener\">The Speech and Language Therapy Team<\/a> at Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD) outlines a process that you can follow, starting with ways to check your child&#8217;s development and ideas you can try at home to help with difficulties your child might be having. You can also find lots of helpful advice and resources on the CFHD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cfhdpreschoolslt\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook page for pre-school age children<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cfhdschoolageslt\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook page for school age children<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8216;Let&#8217;s Get Chatting&#8217; campaign in Devon provides <a href=\"https:\/\/padlet.com\/togetherfordevonantenatalto5\" rel=\"noopener\">key messages to parents about speech, language and communication for their children<\/a>. The resources available include advice about when to be concerned about your child&#8217;s development and who to talk to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Speech and Language UK website have a couple of useful resources too:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Their <a href=\"https:\/\/speechandlanguage.org.uk\/help-for-families\/ages-and-stages\/\" rel=\"noopener\">age and stages<\/a> pages provide information on how children learn to talk and understand words, as well as guidance on &#8216;typical&#8217; language development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They also have a <a href=\"https:\/\/progress-checker.speechandlanguage.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">progress checker tool<\/a>, to help you check the progress of your child\u2019s speech and language development based on typical developmental milestones for children up to age 11.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note that these resources are intended to be used as guides only and any concerns you have should be shared with one of the professionals listed above.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Early identification is crucial in order to provide appropriate and timely support.
