{"id":16150,"date":"2023-09-22T12:16:43","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T11:16:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/educationandfamilies\/?page_id=16150"},"modified":"2026-01-08T14:52:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T14:52:48","slug":"protecting-children-from-harm","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.devon.gov.uk\/children-families-education\/children-and-young-peoples-plan-2019-2023\/protecting-children-from-harm\/","title":{"rendered":"Protecting children from harm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We have a statutory responsibility to intervene in families to <strong>protect children at risk of harm.<\/strong> In a few cases this can mean removing children from families and making alternative arrangements for their long term care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We want to improve the way this system works, and to <strong>strengthen our partnership<\/strong> with schools, health, the police and others to ensure <strong>no child at risk slips through the net.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Protecting children<\/strong> from domestic violence and sexual abuse remains our top priority. The harmful impact of child exploitation is becoming an ever growing concern as is the impact of self-harm, with increasing numbers of children being admitted to hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our priorities to 2023 are:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protecting and supporting children where there is domestic or sexual violence and abuse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protect children from the harm of domestic abuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support children and young people who live in families where there is domestic abuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure adult and children\u2019s services work together with the whole family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure all services support parenting in addition to dealing with any immediate need<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping children experiencing emotional distress and reducing the impact of self-harm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure you and your family has the right information and support to help you if experiencing a crisis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you know how to ask for help<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Help you and your family develop alternative strategies for dealing with emotional distress<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide good information so children can keep themselves safe, particularly from the risks online<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newdevonccg.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/child-and-adolescent-mental-health-services-camhs-transformation-plan-201516-202021-101884\" rel=\"noopener\">CAMHS Transformation Plan.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preventing exploitation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We will:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be there to help young people break free from exploitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work together to disrupt all exploitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better understand the impact of young people as perpetrators of exploitation and develop an offer to intervene<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information please see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devonscp.org.uk\/policies-and-procedures\/exploitation-of-children-strategy\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Exploitation of Children Strategy and Toolkit <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.devonscp.org.uk\/working-with-children\/contextual-safeguarding\/adolescent-safety-framework\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Adolescent Safety Framework (Safer Me).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have a statutory responsibility to intervene in families to protect children at risk of harm.
