Safe Places is a scheme that helps people with learning disabilities if they feel anxious or they are faced with verbal abuse, bullying, or harassment when out in the community. The scheme provides them with a ‘safe place’ to go and ask for help if needed. Places taking part in the scheme display a Safe Place sticker in their window. These can be seen in places such as shop, leisure centres, libraries and so on.
People with learning disabilities can carry an ‘I need help’ card in their purse or wallet and it has their name on, as well as the contact details of a designated person who may be a family member or a carer.
More information about the Safe Places Scheme is available on the Devon & Cornwall Police website.
