At times, you may need support to understand your rights, express your views or ensure your voice is heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We want every carer in Devon to feel informed, confident and empowered to make decisions about their own wellbeing and the support provided to the person they care for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-dcc-subheading wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Understanding Your Rights as a Carer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an unpaid carer, you have rights. The Citizens Advice service helps people to resolve their problems.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Hams &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/southhamscab.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizens Advice South Hams<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teignbridge &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/citizensadviceteignbridge.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizens Advice Teignbridge &#8211; free advice in Devon<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Torbay &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/citizensadvicetorbay.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Home &#8211; Citizens Advice Torbay<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Torridge, North, Mid, and West Devon &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/citizensadvicetnmwd.org.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Rural Devon Citizen&#8217;s Advice | Torridge, North, Mid &#8230;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-dcc-subheading wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Speaking Up for Yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many carers become strong advocates for the people they support, but it can be harder to recognise and speak up for your own needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether you are attending a Carer&#8217;s Assessment, meeting with health professionals, discussing support arrangements or planning for the future, your views and experiences matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We encourage carers to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask questions when something is unclear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share what is important to them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be involved in decisions that affect their lives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek information and advice when needed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Request support if they find it difficult to express their views<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-dcc-subheading wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Independent Advocacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some carers may be entitled to support from an independent advocate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have substantial difficulty being involved in decisions about your care and support, and there is no appropriate person available to support you, an independent advocate may be able to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advocacy support may be available during:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Carer&#8217;s Assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support planning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviews of support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safeguarding processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An advocate&#8217;s role is to help you understand information, express your views, understand your rights and ensure your voice is heard throughout the decision-making process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where advocacy may be appropriate, a social care professional can discuss this with you and make a referral to the Independent Advocacy Service <a href=\"https:\/\/disabilitytogether.org.uk\/support\/advocacy\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Advocacy &#8211; Disability Together<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We&#8217;re Here to Help<\/strong> You do not need to navigate caring alone.
