It is delivered in partnership between Devon County Council and Devon Partnership Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AMHP Service works to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ensure decisions are legally compliant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>protect individuals\u2019 rights and dignity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>work in partnership with health, social care and emergency services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>explore alternatives to hospital admission wherever possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, working closely with partners including NHS services, emergency services, and social care teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who can contact the AMHP Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is primarily for professionals, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>emergency services (police, ambulance)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NHS staff and mental health teams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GPs and primary care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>social care professionals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>voluntary and community sector partners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the public should usually access support through NHS services such as 111.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New single contact number for the AMHP service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 28 July 2026, there is a single phone number for contacting contact the AMHP Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"tel:01392674952\">01392 674952<\/a><\/strong> (24 hours a day, seven days a week)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This replaces the previous arrangement where separate daytime and out-of-hours numbers were used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please save this number, delete any old contact numbers, and share this information with relevant colleagues.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to contact the AMHP Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AMHP Service should be contacted by professionals when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a person\u2019s mental health has deteriorated and there are concerns about risk of harm to themselves or others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the possibility of detention under the MHA needs to be considered<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>advice is needed about whether to make a referral or next steps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many cases, this will involve complex or urgent situations where other support options have been considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When not to contact the AMHP Service<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AMHP service is not for general mental health advice or support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone needs general help, please direct them to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>NHS 111 (mental health option)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GP or community mental health services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>other appropriate local support services<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This helps ensure the AMHP service can prioritise the most urgent cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does an AMHP do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our AMHPs are experienced, specially trained professionals who work across health and social care. They consider the possible need for detention under the MHA and making decisions about the best way to support someone in crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their role includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>responding to MHA referrals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>coordinating assessments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>deciding whether hospital admission is necessary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>exploring alternatives to hospital admission where possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ensuring the law is applied correctly and people\u2019s rights are upheld<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AMHPs bring an independent, social care perspective to decision-making, alongside medical professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the AMHP Service works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you contact the AMHP Service your your referral will be considered by an AMHP.
