Gypsy and traveller encampments, evictions, accommodation and costs 2015-2018

The information provided in response to Questions 1 and 5 includes enforcement actions for any unauthorised occupation of county council land and not only traveller settlements.

1. How many Gypsy and Traveller unauthorised encampments have you cleared from the local authority in:

2. In relation to the cleared encampments listed in question one, how many pitches were in each cleared encampment.
(If you do not know, please state whether, to the best of your knowledge, there were any individuals or families living in the cleared encampments.)

Unauthorised encampments may be made up of many family groupings, one extended family group, collections of single people travelling in a group, or just one person. Detailed information about this for each site is not collected or recorded, therefore we do not hold this information.

3. How many NEW authorised Gypsy and Traveller pitches were created by your local authority in:

We do not hold this information. As a County Council, we hold no duty for providing new Gypsy and Traveller pitches or sites. Please contact District and Unitary authorities using the information on the link provided.

4. How many authorised Gypsy and Traveller pitches are there currently in your local authority?

16 pitches over two sites

5. What were the full evictions costs to your council for all cleared unauthorised Gypsy and Traveller encampments in:

i) 2015  – £8411.52 2015/16

iii) 2017 – £7512.73 2017/18
iv) 2018 – £2112.86 to date 2018/19
(These costs should include staff costs and resources, any contractor costs, court costs and legal fees, clear up costs as well as any other costs relating to evictions from unauthorised encampments.)

Devon County Council financial reports are based on financial years; our figures are provided on this basis. These totals may include enforcement actions for any unauthorised occupation of county council land and not only traveller settlements.The figures provided exclude staff costs; there is no way to calculate internal staff costs in relation to the eviction of unauthorised encampments for Gypsy Travellers.

We are not considering or plan to seek a court injunction for unauthorised encampments on Devon County Council land.
