Cycle lanes – number, status and spend

1.) The number, length and locations of any new cycle lanes in your borough/local authority since March 2020.

Within Exeter City, we have put in 9 pop up measures to provide new cycle lanes. This includes
– 7 point closures.
– 1 is to provide contraflow cycling on a 60 metre stretch of road and
– 1 to provide a contraflow cycle lane on 180 metre

The point closures were chosen as they enabled creation of quiet corridors on identified strategic cycle routes, for example 4 of the measures are used to create a 4km E9 quiet corridor linking residential areas along the route with major employment areas on the eastern edge of the city at Pynes Hill, the RD&E Hospital, County Hall and the city centre.

Other proposals have been progressed elsewhere in the County; however, these are crossings or enhancements aiding active travel rather than new cycle lanes. More details are available online at:

Active Travel

2.) Month-by-month figures of the numbers of cyclists using these lanes.

The only location we have month by month figures is on the E9 pop up route, as referred to above, where we have been recording peak hour flows.  This is set out below:

Peak hour Ped/cycle flow change
Before 181
June 206 14%
July 195 8%
August 214 18%
Sept 281 55%
Oct 219 21%
Nov 311 72%
Dec 271 49%

3.) The amount of money spent on installing any new cycle lanes since March 2020.

£153,628.78

4.) The number of complaints received over any new cycle lanes installed since March 2020.

5.) Which of the newly installed cycle lanes are to be/have been removed, if any.

In Exeter, there were 9 changes made to provide pop up cycle lanes. To date, one has been removed, (Vaughan Road)
– 4 are in the process of being made permanent
– 4 where the trials are being extended with further consultation on next steps ongoing or planned.
