Walking

TravelWise shoe poster

Around a quarter of all trips by car are two miles or less. Eight per cent of these are less than one mile. Many of these could be walked or cycled. Walking is almost perfect exercise. Brisk walking can improve your health, reduce stress, make you feel good and its FREE! · Physical activity, such as walking, for 30 minutes 5 times a week can half your chance of a heart attack or stroke

Walking to work, the shops or school, instead of using the car for short journeys, will be good for your health, save you money on fuel costs and benefit the environment too.

Why is it good to walk to school?

  • Children walking to school with their parents have the opportunity to develop road safety skills.
  • Parents and children have the opportunity for quality time to chat.
  • Children arrive at school alert and ready to learn after fresh air and exercise.
  • Children need the daily exercise that walking to school can offer them. The recommended minimum exercise for children is one hour of physical activity per day.
  • More active children are likely to become more active adults resulting in less health problems in later life. In the long term being active protects against illnesses like heart disease.
  • Contributing to reductions in traffic congestion and improved air quality.

Every year there are two weeks, one in May and one in October, when children are encouraged to make an extra effort to walk to school. Walk to School Week is a national campaign managed by Pedestrians Association and TravelWise.

Walking the Way to Health

Walking the Way to Health is a joint initiative of the British Heart Foundation and Countryside Agency. It started in England in 2000 and aims to get more people, particularly those who currently take little or no exercise, walking in their own communities. Local projects, often partnerships between District Councils and Primary Care Trusts, have received matched funding to enable them to set up a series of 'Led Walks'. This involves trained volunteer walk leaders taking groups of people on short walks of 1.5 - 3 miles. Visit the "Walking the way to Health" Initiative web site for further information.
