There are approximately 122 junctions with traffic lights, giving a total of over 1550 traffic signal heads. Traffic signals are used to safely control the movement of vehicles at complex junctions in order to maximise traffic flow. Some junctions are set up to provide priority to public transport.
SIEMENS maintains these on the County Council’s behalf as the term contractor. Any faults, such as bulbs not working or lights stuck on red etc., should be reported to the Council’s Highways Operations Control Centre on 01392 383329. Serious faults will be attended with 4 hours and non-serious within 13 hours. Faults may not be able to be rectified immediately.
Most of the signals are capable of self diagnosis and report their faults directly to the Urban Traffic Control computer in County Hall.

Portable Traffic Signals are used whenever there is a need to manage traffic whilst work is carried out on the highway.
A licence is needed to place portable traffic signals on any section of public road.
Problems relating to portable traffic signals should in the first instance be reported to the company on whose site they are operating, by calling the number on the site information board. If this is not successful please ring 01392 383 329
