Grit Bins

Grit bins are provided on roads that are not normally treated at known troublespots such as steep hills, frost hollows and sometimes on footpaths. Grit bins are provided for use on the public highway and are NOT for use on private drives and paths etc. When using grit on the road, please be careful not to spread too much as it will run out very quickly. Further guidance is available on the Keeping Devon’s roads moving fact sheet.

Grit bins are filled up before the winter season and re-filled when we are made aware that they are empty. If your bin is empty please contact the MyDevon Roads & Transport team on 0845 155 1004. There are more than 3000 grit bins in Devon and whilst we try and keep them all well stocked we cannot be everywhere at once. Please be patient, we will refill grit bins as soon as we can.

For more information on grit bins see our winter service FAQs.

Grit bin map:

The location of grit bins is available on this map.

Please note: Once the map window opens if you choose to maximise it you will need to click the page refresh button in the browser toolbar to get the map to fill the whole larger window.

Please select the layers icon to find grit bins. Move around the map by holding down the left mouse button and moving the map. You can also zoom in by using the zoom slider on the left side of the screen or by holding down the right mouse button and drawing a shape. A gazetteer allows you to search by place or street name.

Completeness of information - please note not all grit bins are shown.
