Sustainable School Travel

Walking

  • Set up a ‘Walking Bus’
  • Encourage younger pupils to walk through reward schemes e.g. Go for Gold
  • Identify and recommend safer walking routes to school
  • Highlight places where crossing points for pupils are unsafe and talk with your Road Safety Officer about improvements
  • Buy lockers for pupils to use so they do not have to carry heavy bags to school
  • Set up a Park and Walk scheme with drop-off points away from the school gate
  • Link with your local doctor’s surgery/Primary Care Trust or hospital to promote healthy ways to get to school
  • Create a safe and pleasant ‘school zone’with priority given to children
  • Demonstrate to parents and pupils the social advantages of walking
