Sustainable School Travel

Set up a ‘Walking Bus’
Encourage younger pupils to walk through reward schemes e.g. Go for Gold
Identify and recommend safer walking routes to school
Highlight places where crossing points for pupils are unsafe and talk with your Road Safety Officer about improvements
Buy lockers for pupils to use so they do not have to carry heavy bags to school
Set up a Park and Walk scheme with drop-off points away from the school gate
Link with your local doctor’s surgery/Primary Care Trust or hospital to promote healthy ways to get to school
Create a safe and pleasant ‘school zone’with priority given to children
Demonstrate to parents and pupils the social advantages of walking
