Sustainable School Travel
Updating your School Travel Plan
It's important to remember that your School Travel Plan is a guide for action and should be reviewed and updated regularly. Reviews are submitted during the spring or summer term (deadline usually the beginning of June) and should contain the travel data from the most recent school census i.e the year the review is submitted. ( This data should of course be updated every year for the census and may supplied by your school administrator from SIMS alternatively contact us for help on 01392 383700 or stplans@devon.gov.uk)
Updating your travel plan also means you will be eligible for our Devon TravelWise Schools Awards. The purpose of the award is to reward schools who have produced a travel plan and to encourage them to continue it's implementation and development.
There are 4 levels of TravelWise award:
··Bronze ··Silver ··Gold ··Platinum
Criteria for Bronze Award: (Sustainable Schools Framework Travel Doorway- Satisfactory)
To criteria for the Bronze Award are as follows:
- To qualify for the Bronze Award, schools must achieve the following during the development of their School Travel Plan:1.A working group including pupils and adults
- School census data, surveys and consultation to produce baseline data about the journey to school
- Awareness raising about issues of safety, health and sustainability related to travel to school; involvement of the wider community
- Form STP1 requesting travel facilities and engineering works to be completed in partnership with the Road Safety Officer and/or engineer for your area
- Achievable targets to reduce use of the car
- Links to the school curriculum, e.g. through citizenship, geography or ICT
- Links to the School Improvement Plan and signed approval by the governors, head teacher and pupil representatives.
N.B All planning applications for school sites must include an up to date travel plan that ensures safe and sustainable travel to school for all. This must be done in consultation with your sustainable school travel advisor.

Criteria for Silver Award (Sustainable Schools Framework travel doorway-Working towards Good)
- Evidence of a) curriculum work related to school travel and the issues of health, safety and the environment; b) evidence of awareness raising and achievements related to school travel and the issues of health & sustainability (to include 5 & 6)
- Census travel data updated each autumn. Hands up surveys may be included, as well as surveys of how children would like to travel and analysis of any changes
- Results are publicised and new targets set if necessary
- School Travel Action Plan is reviewed and updated to ensure that implementation of actions continues
- “Getting to School” webpage on school website with a link to DCC Sustainable Schools page
- Sustainable travel information in the school prospectus

Criteria for Gold Award (Sustainable Schools Framework travel doorway- Good)
- Evidence of a) curriculum work related to school travel and the issues of health, safety and the environment; b) evidence of awareness raising and achievements related to school travel and the issues of health & sustainability (to include 6,7/8)
- Census travel data updated each autumn. Hands up surveys may be included, as well as surveys of how children would like to travel and analysis of any changes.
- Results are publicised and new targets set if necessary. Publicity to be included in school documents and literature, e.g. prospectus and website
- School Travel Action Plan is reviewed and updated to ensure that implementation of actions continues.
5. To demonstrate clear, sustained and effective programmes to reduce the use of the car. e.g. Promotion of Car Share activities,
Park & Stride facility
6. Regular communication with parents via email or newsletter and updated “Getting to School” webpage
7. Secondaries - Outline plans for sustainable travel for new intake from partner primary schools.
8. Primaries –Link with Secondaries to promote sustainable travel for transition.

Criteria for Platinum Award (Sustainable Schools Framework Travel Doorway– Working towards Outstanding)
- Evidence of a) curriculum work related to school travel and the issues of health, safety and the environment; b) evidence of awareness raising and achievements related to school travel and the issues of health & sustainability (to include 6,7/8)
- Census travel data updated each autumn. Hands up surveys may be included, as well as surveys of how children would like to travel and analysis of any changes
- Results are publicised and new targets set if necessary. Publicity to be included in school documents and literature, e.g. prospectus and website
- School Travel Action Plan is reviewed and updated to ensure that implementation of actions continue.
- Encourage pupils & staff to apply what they have learned about sustainable travel to their lives outside school and share learning with the community and promote the global dimension. Involve stakeholders in periodic evaluation of progress.
- Regular communication with parents via email or newsletter and updated “Getting to School” webpage
- Secondaries - Implement plans for sustainable travel for new intake from partner primary schools.
- Primaries – Well developed links with Secondaries to promote sustainable travel for transition.
The Platinum Award is to be valid for one year only and schools will need to reapply for it annually to retain their ‘Platinum status’.
