Street Lighting

Maintenance of Devon's street lights and illuminated traffic signs is carried out by the County Council.

Devon County Council is responsible for the majority of street lighting throughout Devon, excluding Plymouth and Torbay.

The Street Lighting team is responsible for the maintenance of the County Council's street lights and illuminated traffic signs and administers the contract to supply them with electricity. We also design new street lighting installations and approve the designs of developers.

Within the County Council area there are currently over 80,000 street lights and illuminated signs. Street lighting is something many people take for granted but it is very important to us. It reduces the likelihood of road traffic accidents for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicle users. It also increases the safety of our environment and property by reducing crime and vandalism.
