Frequently Asked Questions

What does the service provide?
A new scheme which, provides free handyperson service help to:
- undertake a Home Safety Assessment (HSA)
- identify hazards, which may put people at risk of accidents and injuries
- identify issues at home which may contribute to a loss of well being and health
- undertake up to 2 hours work in the client’s home to make their home safer
- signpost people to other agencies who can help them.

Delivery is dependant on agreement to the HSA check

Who is eligible?
People, carers and families who are vulnerable due to age, disability or financial circumstances including people who have been victims of crime.
People do not need to be eligible under the Fair Access to Care Services (FACS) scheme.

What type of work can be undertaken?
For older and disabled people.
This may include:
- providing security measures such as window locks and door chains
- providing smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and replacing their batteries
- fixing grab rails
- providing key safes
- securing loose floor coverings

For children and families
This may include:
- fitting stairgates, cooker and fire guards
- providing fire safety measures such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- fitting child safety locks and replacing broken toilet seats

How do I refer people to the scheme?
A.
Anyone can refer a person to the scheme providing they have their consent to do so.

Is there a charge to the person?
No. The safety assessment, work on-site and the cost of materials used are currently covered by the scheme.

Priority will be given to tasks, which reduce hazards and prevent accidents in the home

This is not a rapid response service.  The service should be delivered within 4 weeks from referral.
