The Independent Living Centre is based in Newton Abbot, where our NHS and Devon County Council funded service help people from all over Devon to find solutions to maintain independence and safety in the home.

Our premises in Devon House, Newton Abbot, is ideally located for visitors from all over the county to come and try our our display of equipment.

The Occupational Therapists have planned a series of advice and assessment "Outreach" events at Mobility Shops all over Devon in 2013.

Who are we?

The Independent Living Centre (ILC)  offers a free and impartial assessment and information service to anyone in Devon who is looking for equipment to enhance their independence. The Centre does not sell equipment but has a large range of equipment on display for you to try. Our range covers all aspects of life including; mobility, personal care, clothing, bathing, cooking, seating and beds.

Come and visit us at our centre and talk to our friendly approachable staff.

You can telephone, email or write to make an appointment for an assessment at the Centre from Monday to Friday or call in on a Wednesday morning for a look around.

What do we do?

We can help to identify the right equipment for you, tell you how much it should cost and can look into grants or other sources of funding when purchasing equipment. We keep up to date information on equipment from all local and national suppliers.

Our occupational therapists can assess your needs and demonstrate a large range of equipment for daily living and mobility, displayed in realistic settings, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, living room.

Can't find clothes to fit? Need help with getting around or keeping in touch? We can help.

We provide information handouts known as Before you Buy to help you make informed choices when buying equipment.

In Addition the Independent Living Centre has some exciting new equipment on display for June and July. We have been loaned the new Theraposture Freedom Rise, - a powered bed that can transform from a flat bed into an upright seated position to assist people with transfers difficulties (www.theraposture.co.uk). We also have the Neater Eater feeding aid from Neater solutions - a modular system designed to enable people to use their own movements to feed themselves (www.neater.co.uk). We welcome people to come and have a go with these products. Please ring us on 01392 380181 to find out more and to book a time to visit.
