DEVON ROCKS EVENT PROGRAMME

International Year of Planet Earth Mosaic Exhibition - Monday 5th May - Saturday 28th June

A major international event, the mosaic pieces for this exhibition are inspired by, and commemorate, the nine broad themes of IYPE. Works have been created by over 75 artists from around the world including Devon and Exeter.  A web-based version of the exhibition is also available.

Archaeology Walk at Witnes Moor and Hembury Hillfort – Saturday 7 June 2.00pm

A guided walk at Witness Moor exploring the whetstone mining heritage of the area and the adjacent prehisitoric hillfort of Hembury Hill.  It will also look at how the woodland is managed today.

Salcombe - Kingsbridge estuary views & foreshore, 21st June 2008, 2pm

A circular walk along Kingsbridge and Bowcombe Creeks and back over the hill between, to investigate sheltered rocky shores, salt marshes and estuarine birds, so bring binoculars and an ID guide if you have them.  About 2.5 miles, with a few level but slippery rocks and a short but steep climb.  Meet at the Kingsbridge Tourist Information Centre on Kingsbridge Quay (map ref: SX 735 441) at 2pm, return at 4.30pm.

A chance to explore an area of the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve away from the South West Coast Path with Natural England's Reserve Warden and voluntary warden. Stout footwear is essential. Bring a picnic lunch. Places limited so please book early.

Granite Song Exhibition - Saturday 14th June - Wednesday 16th July 2008

An exhibition of photographs by Chris Chapman of sculpture by Peter Randall-Page based on the well-known local book 'Granite Song'.  This documents the making of five sculptures and a garden in the Teign Valley near Drewsteignton.  Made from local materials and embedded in the landscape without signs or plaques, they have a powerful resonance.  This exhibition shows photographs of the sculptures and the processes by which they were made.

Sharpham Estate and Dart Estuary ramble – 3rd July 2008

Dartmoor Rock Walks - Sunday 20th July 2pm

This 3 hour walk will allow you to explore the creation and moulding of Dartmoor’s rocks.  Imagine an ancient tropical ocean with exotic swimming creatures and coral reefs. Imagine super hot liquids and gases pumping through the cracks and fissures of the rocks.  Discover clues to these past episodes frozen into the rocks and landforms. Come and see the shining crystals, glittering ores and colourful clays that make up Dartmoor.  No need to pre-book places, just arrive in plenty of time
