Archaeology

The Archaeological service of the County Council is concerned with the protection of the wider historic landscape, the buried archaeological resource, archaeological 'monuments', industrial, marine and defence sites and the palaeoenvironmental resource.

The Archaeology team is responsible for compiling and maintaining the primary database for the County's archaeological resource: the Sites and Monuments Register (SMR), whose upgrading to a more comprehensive 'Historic Environment Record' (HER) is at present under consideration
